1688 Buying Agent for Overseas Wholesale Buyers
1688 is the domestic wholesale marketplace run by the Alibaba group. It sits behind the same Chinese-language interface as the consumer platforms, but its sellers are factories, trading companies and wholesale stalls quoting tiered prices by quantity. For an overseas buyer, working with a 1688 agent turns that marketplace into a usable procurement channel: someone with a Chinese business account, a domestic receiving address and an export operation buys on your behalf, checks what arrives, and moves it out of China as a single commercial shipment.
Why 1688 Is Difficult to Use Directly
The obstacles are practical rather than commercial. Nearly every listing, specification sheet and chat conversation is in Chinese, and price tiers are written for domestic trade — the quoted figure usually assumes pickup or domestic delivery, excludes export packing, and carries no paperwork that a customs broker abroad can act on. Sellers expect payment through domestic methods, not an overseas transfer, and delivery ends at a Chinese address. Even a buyer who manages the purchase often finds the goods cannot leave the country without a commercial invoice, packing list and, where applicable, a certificate of origin and a bill of lading.
What the 1688 Buying Agent Does
Mutual Trade acts as a 1688 buying agent and consolidator based in Yiwu, on the edge of Futian Market. The work covers the full path from listing to loading:
- Purchasing on your behalf: we place and follow up orders with 1688 sellers against your specification, compare alternative suppliers on cost, lead time and quality risk, and confirm quantities before payment.
- Receiving and checking: goods arrive at our Yiwu warehouse, where we count them against the order and run a basic quality check on arrival before anything is repacked.
- Repacking for export: retail packaging is often too light for sea freight. We relabel, build export cartons, and prepare mixed-SKU cartons, gift bundles and seasonal packs where your range calls for them.
- Merging with market orders: 1688 purchases can be combined with goods bought in the Yiwu market and nearby industrial belts into one consolidated load, so a single container or air shipment carries your whole buying programme.
- Documents and freight: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin (CO/Form A), bill of lading, insurance and customs declaration, with HS code advice. Sea, air, China-Europe rail and express options are quoted against your destination.
For larger or first orders we can also arrange supplier screening, on-site factory visits and inspection against AQL 2.5/4.0 sampling, with photo and video reports. Quality issues are reported within 24 hours and tracked through a defined closure loop.
1688 or the Physical Market?
The two channels suit different goods. 1688 is the better route for standardised items with clear, written specifications — hardware, spare parts and consumables, basic household goods, packaging materials — where the listing tells you what you need to know and repeat orders matter more than inspection by hand. The physical market and its surrounding industrial belts remain the right choice for items you need to see, handle and compare side by side: textiles and apparel, bags, fashion accessories and jewellery, toys and seasonal ranges, where colour, finish and construction decide whether the goods are sellable. Many buyers use both, sourcing the stable lines on 1688 and reserving market visits for the ranges that carry design risk.
Taobao Buying Support for Samples and Small Lots
Not every requirement justifies a wholesale order. For pre-production samples, single reference pieces and small test lots, we also provide taobao buying agent support: we purchase from Taobao sellers, receive the items at the same Yiwu warehouse, and hold them for review, combination with other purchases, or dispatch by courier. This is commonly used to check a finish, match a colour or confirm a specification before committing to a bulk 1688 order.
Order Flow and Timing
A standard engagement starts with requirement confirmation over one to three days, followed by quotation and samples over three to fifteen days. Purchasing and production run fifteen to forty-five days after confirmation, and the pre-shipment inspection report reaches you at least three days before dispatch. Consolidation and dispatch take five to fifteen days; allowing for sea transit, the overall cycle is typically thirty to ninety days. Holiday and seasonal ranges should be locked ninety to one hundred and twenty days ahead.
Payment is by T/T with a 30% deposit and 70% balance against copy of the bill of lading or before shipment, with L/C available for larger or first orders and staged 30/30/40 terms on request. For enquiries, write to info@mutualdropship.com.
